The 39th international ESTA-conference will take place in Falun on 1 - 5 June 2011, a reason as good as any for string teachers to visit this town of great historical and cultural interest. There are many other reasons as well to visit the town with a world heritage site – the Falu copper mine – which inspired Richard Wagner himself. Also, Falun has housed a number of writers and other artists such as the winner of the Nobel Prize in literature, Selma Lagerlöf, and the painter Carl Larsson to mention a couple.
The beautiful houses of Falun are characterised by the centuries' long presence of the copper mine - the red miner’s cottages as well as the impressive official buildings of the mining company. The grandness that meets visitors at Bergslagssalongen is not easily surpassed, even by international standards. Falun is located in the centre of Dalarna, a province testifying to the historical and cultural significance that this area had and still has for Sweden. In the areas surrounding Falun you will find villages with a long history and old buildings, farming districts, picturesque mountain pastures, forests and lakes, and a rich wild flora and fauna. There are elk and roe deer but also wolves, bears and great horned owls...Dalarna has one of Sweden's most interesting and well preserved virgin forests. In addition to the magnificent landscape, you will meet cultural traditions, old customs and culinary specialities that together make Dalarna the perfect travel destination. Whether you go by foot, canoe, bicycle or car and whatever kind of vacation you prefer, Dalarna and Falun will give you wonderful experiences.
Falu Copper Mine, which is on UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites, should have a chapter of its own. It is the oldest known company in the world. Today, the mining operations are shut down but the mine is open to visitors. Carl Larsson’s home in Sundborn outside Falun and the Zorn Museum in Mora are worth mentioning too. The county museum of Dalarna is also situated in Falun
